KRIS ANDERSON
Courageous Storytelling - Designing and executing strong images that keep a viewer engaged

We are all wired to connect with and remember stories. We're surrounded by amazing storytelling - books, movies, TV, songs, dance... and of course photographs. As photographers, to give our audience the best chance of reading and understanding our stories, we need to snag them and keep them engaged. In this session, commercial and fine art photographer Kris Anderson will take you through the techniques he uses to craft engaging narrative-driven images that keep a viewer hooked. He'll reveal some of the intentional (or unintentional!) choices you can make that either pull a viewer in or push them away, and give you tools to critically analyse your own work. He will probably rock a couple of dad jokes too; sadly these will not be considered grounds for a refund.

TONY STEWART
22 from 22 in 22 - Business Observations from 22yrs in Photography to Help You in 2022

Geared to assist all photographers grappling with the business of photography, Tony will present a series of observations, gleaned from over two decades experience in the photographic industry. Introduced through many personal anecdotes, Tony will also delve into a number of key business principles, learned from assorted business courses over his career also. The overall aim is to push attendee's understanding of business practise, so they can reflect on how they can become the best photographic practitioner they want to be. Intended to challenge and educate, Tony will reflect on survival in a tumultuous industry, having experienced digital change, Canterbury earthquakes, the GFC, and now Covid. Delivered in part with humour, yet with a completely honest and serious message. For new photographers, this presentation could read 'The Unsaid Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Starting Out!”. Equally, many aspects will resonate with seasoned pro’s, as a reminder that we don't always do what we know we should be doing! Tony is an NZIPP Grand Master of Photography, who has been working full time in photography for 22 years. Living just on the outskirts of Christchurch, Tony’s business is very general, with a strong commercial, wedding and event basis. His previous background was primary & secondary teaching, as well as having taught business studies for 10yrs part time on ARA Diploma of Photography course.

SUMMER MURDOCK
Leaning into Wonder and the Magic of Light

Light elicits a profound sense of awe and wonder. It can turn an ordinary scene into something otherworldly. Light amplifies emotions and connections in images and speaks straight to our hearts. It could be argued that utilizing light in interesting ways is the single most powerful way to make your work sing. So if we know that light is key in creating interesting images, are we really in control of it? Do we walk into a situation and really SEE the light and know how to use it to its fullest potential intentionally? Join Summer as she explores how to slow down, be inspired by light, and see it with fresh eyes. She will discuss how to create varying degrees of haze and control it with intention vs luck as well as the basics of achieving dramatic sun flare and rim light. She will share her light-based outdoor location scouting system and more. This discussion will push you creatively as well as give you some technical knowledge and confidence that will help you let go of some uncertainty about controlling the light around you and help you get the images that are stuck in your head out into your camera.

SIMON RUNTING
The Art of Bird Photography

Based on producing images that stand alone as an Art or Fine Art image. I try to produce images that someone who has no interest in birds would be happy to have on their wall. I try hard to get different pictures that aren't just what I call a 'bird on a stick' photograph. Also being able to get extreme close up images is something I often strive for.

JANYNE FLETCHER
A Public Livelihood Created “In Camera”

(in camera /ɪnˈkam(ə)rə/ - LAW - in private, in particular taking place in the private chambers of a judge, with the press and public excluded.) Self confessed, self conscious introvert Janyne Fletcher shares insights into the marriage of her solitary, contemplative creative process along side revealing herself and her work to the general public. Janyne's personal history along with her thoughts and feelings about her adopted home provide a canvas for her private creative and public business endeavours. Janyne faces up to the challenging amalgam of practical business “know how” and unrestrained creativity. She explains why this is important and talks about the constant state of discovery as she balances these priorities without compromising herself as a person. Janyne is an NZIPP Grand Master and is the proud owner of a gallery in the heart of Central Otago where she creates, prints and frames all of her own work.

BILLY PLUMMER
Unleashing the Power of Personal Work

Take away all your paid work and all the tests that you did to get that paid work and what’s left? That’s YOUR work and no-one else’s - it’s why you picked up a camera in the first place, right? In his session Billy will show how purely personal projects have driven his practice, been the catalyst for commissioned work, have helped him diversify, drive his practice and kept him (almost) sane. Billy is unique in that he’s an advertising creative director turned advertising photographer. Having commissioned millions of client $ on photography as a creative he’s been “the client”. He’s also something of a mentor as co-founder of The Series Project, a photo workshop that focusses on “the what and why for pro photographers that already know how” and is extremely passionate about the importance and power of personal work. If you need to shift beyond the ordinary with the work you do, or simply re-look at, refresh or refine your approach to personal work this will be a talk to listen to.
